How Not To Be Mistaken For (And Treated Like) A Troll On A Personal LJ
This is presuming, of course, that you are not a troll. If you are a troll, you don't need any help from me; it is easy as breathing to pop in on somebody's LJ and start a flamewar.
This is stuff I've learned as I went along. Some of it, I learned the hard way:
Stop telling yourself that an unlocked LJ means you can treat it as if it were a print newspaper where the letters to the editor don't have to put up with an editor. Few people regard or treat their LJs that way. Most people view their LJs as a sort of online "home" where they invite a few friends in for a modern electronic salon. Even if they haven't locked it, or even read the security part of the FAQ, they expect people who wander in to respect that the space belongs to them.
So, if you don't want to get treated like the rude stranger who wanders into somebody's house, raids their fridge, pisses in their potted plant, and kicks their fluffy little dog, you need to behave like a guest.
1. Before ever posting on somebody's LJ, read their info page, and read at least a week's worth of their LJ. This will give you a good feel for what is and is not acceptable in their "house". If you don't see their current friends having political arguments with them, for instance, you may want to reconsider your plan to pop in and set them straight on the bluestateredstate thing you care passionately about.
2. Introduce yourself in your first post. Yes, yes--I know you don't give out any personal info on your info page. Good for you. Find something to say to introduce yourself, such as how you found their blog, and what interests you share with them. Be friendly. Be polite.
3. Don't start out with an argument or criticism. Look at it this way, if you were milling around a party and wanted to meet someone, would it be wise to walk up and criticize their clothing? Would there be any chance at all that they would like you or want to talk to you ever again?
4. Don't comment on stuff that sounds very personal, at first. You just met them, so its much more appropriate to chat about the latest movies than to discuss their love life. Break this and you may be mistaken for a stalker.
